How does the Bavarian Formula work?

The Modified Bavarian Formula (modifizierte bayerische Formel) is the standard algorithm used by German universities, the central evaluation office (ZAB), and employers to convert foreign grades into the German grading system (1.0 = Excellent, 4.0 = Minimum Pass, 5.0 = Fail).

The Standard Formula

N = 1 + 3 × ((N_max - N_actual) / (N_max - N_min))

  • N_max: The highest possible grade in your foreign system (e.g., 4.0 in US, 10.0 in India, 100%).
  • N_min: The lowest passing grade in your foreign system (e.g., 2.0 in US).
  • N_actual: Your actual earned grade.

Handling Inverted & UK Scales

Some countries, like Austria and Czechia, use "inverted" scales where 1.0 is the best and 4.0 or 5.0 is a pass. EuroCV Studio handles these conversions automatically.

For UK Honours degrees, the grading system is categorical (1st, 2:1, 2:2, 3rd) rather than numeric. We provide an estimated mapping range since a direct decimal conversion is not possible.

Disclaimer on Official Recognition

This tool provides an estimated calculation. For an official equivalence required for visa applications (Chancenkarte) or university admissions, you must obtain a formal statement from the Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen (ZAB) or use the Anabin database. Do not represent this calculation as an official credential.
